It’s official folks: the movie version of 24 has a greenli…. Well, it has a scr…. Actually, it just has a deal in place for the producers of the show to write the script.

But while 20th Century Fox’s film team will decided whether or not to proceed with the film based on the strength of creators Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran’s script, it hardly seems likely that the company will pass up the chance to base a film on one its most popular TV franchises.

With US audience figures at an all-time high and fans here in the UK lapping up Jack Bauer (Keifer Sutherland)’s bad days, it looks like we can expect a 24 film by 2007 or 2008 at the latest.

The current rough idea for the film is held in a vault so impenetrable Jack would have to torture thirteen people and shoot down a helicopter before he got access, but we do know that the producers plan to shelve the real-time hook so that our hero can dash around the world (including, possibly London) and still find time to, you know, go to the toilet.

And the plan is also to make sure it’s watchable even for those who don’t regularly catch the show.

Update from Fox:

20th Century Fox has closed a deal with Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow to move forward on the 24 feature film.

The Kiefer Sutherland real-time thriller will be written by the show's creators, Surnow and Cochran and most likely star Kiefer as CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) Agent, Jack Bauer. Variety reports plans call for the movie will abandon the real-time counter which will allow much greater plot possibilities, opening up scenarios not possible on a show where all the action takes place in one day; chief on the list is international travel, possibly London.

Surnow and Cochran will finalize the full script following the 6th season of 24 which will begin in January, 2007. The plot will begin at the end of that season and set up for the 7th; however, the film is not expected to be tied too heavily to the show's mythology and alienate non-fans.

Look for the 24 movie to begin production next spring and hit theaters in late 2007.

What movies has Hopkins done, I don't think I'm familiar with him....

Well, he hasn't done a lot of standout movies...but that's not important. What matters is that he directed the majority of the first season of 24, and proved that he has more style than Jon Cassar, Brad Turner, or any other director currently working on the show.


I don't care about the yet undisclosed reason for which he left. He must return.
