Before I even started to watch Season1 I knew that his wife would die and that Nina would be a baddie. --- That's 24 crazy mates for you Maybe that's why I like season 2 so much, where 1 is clearly superiour, more surprise element.
Oh and it was inspired to kill his wife...after all he had been through that day as well as the 'Gunfight at the Bauer Corral' at the end, when he thought both wife and daughter were dead, he then finds out they weren't.....think of the relief. Only to have his wife killed by a jealous ex/half german(wotever she is)/Treacherous colleague he'd been tapping at work.....even if I was Jack Bauer I would've cried.

'Well, let's say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of terrorist energy in the Los Angeles area. Based on this morning's reading, it would be a Twinkie thirty-five feet long, weighing approximately six hundred pounds.'
Jack: 'Thats a BIG Twinkie.'

yeah the whole emotional aspect of those last few episodes is phenomenal. at least his daughter survived...
in season 2 though you can really see how protective he is of Kim because of what happened.
